THE twin subject of vaastu and feng shui, both for the purpose of improving our life and for finding solutions to various problems dogging us, has always intrigued me no end. While science and technology ad¬vance at a dizzying pace, we also need to realise — as I did — the importance of ancient wisdom. Even as we swim in the digital ocean, we need to lean on alter¬native schools of science. Occult scienc¬es are a way of life today. Dealing with uncertainties and risks is a very common modern day stress. Pressures of daily life have created a great need for comfort and guidances. For instance, divinities tools feng shui, i- ching numerology, vaastu, runes, tarot cards, four pillars of destiny and astrology predictions are extremely popular today.

Vastu shastra is an ancient doctrine which consists of precepts born out of a traditional view on how the laws of nature affect human dwellings. The designs are based on directional alignments. It used to be applied in Hindu architecture, especially for Hindu temples, and covers other domains, including vehicles, vessels, furniture, sculpture, paintings etc. The foundation of Vastu is traditionally ascribed to the sage Maamuni Mayan in South India, and Vishvakarman in North India.

Feng shui is a Chinese philosophical system of harmonizing the human existence with the surrounding environment. The term feng shui literally translates as "wind-water" in English. This is a cultural shorthand taken from the passage of the now-lost Classic of Burial recorded in Guo Pu's commentary Feng shui is one of the Five Arts of Chinese Metaphysics, classified as physiognomy. The feng shui practice discusses architecture in metaphoric terms of "invisible forces" that bind the universe, earth, and man together.
