 ABOUT HAIR TRANSPLANTATION

Hair transplant surgery originated in Japan. In 1939, Dr. Okuda, a Japanese dermatologist developed a breakthrough process to restore hair loss used by a punch technique in a post burn patient, following which similar tech used by another Japanese dermatologist Tamura in the year 1943. First hair transplant male pattern alopecia was done in 1952 in New York by Norman Orentreich. Following which modern tech was gradually started.

Patients own hair is taken from back of scalp and transplanted over bald areas by follicular unit technique. This hair is permanent, grows normally, needs hair cut & shampooing. Also done over moustache, beard and eye brows. This is one of the commonest cosmetic surgery performed. Baldness is usually hereditary and may be of male or female type. It can be done in any age & sex in an adult person. Transplanted hair is natural hair, which grows normally, needs hair cut, shampooing, can be transplanted in limited hair lost areas of eyebrows, moustache & beard also. This is 5 to 6 hours surgery, done under local anaesthesia. Patient can move around, eat, drink & enjoy music and movies during surgery. Operation is done under local anaesthesia. Donar hair is taken from posterior part of scalp & area is closed directly. The suter line becomes indistinct later. The area of scalp with hair is divided into small pieces called pluks (or follicles). each containing 1 to 4 hairs . They are transplanted over bald area. This is called Minimicrograph Technique & Follicular Unit Transfer Technique (FUT). Transplanted hair takes 3 to 6 months to grow. The donar area is not visible. In the Post Operative period Minoxidil is applied locally along with oral medicines. Patient can go home on the same day and can join to office on the next day.

There is no age bar. Our youngest patient is of age 22 years and eldest patient of hair transplant is of 69 years. This technique of hair transpalnt is equally applicable in both male and female patient.
