Dance Group :- Arundhati started learning dance under Asit Chatterjee's
guidance at the age of Five, since than she is associated
with "Ragini". After 35 years of association
she is now the key person of the group. In the absence
of its founder director Asit Chatterjee, she is the incharge
now. The group Ragini performs in various stages and in
various occassions.
Asit
Chatterjee is an illustrious name in the sphere of 'Rabindra
Nritya' or dance style initiated by Rabindranath. As a
specialist dancer of this 'gharana,' intelligent director
and an ace choreographer, Asit Chatterjee has received
immense fame and admiration in India and abroad.
He played the important role of the cultural ambassador
of India in U.S.A., Europe and China as the lead dancer
in Udaysankar Ballet Troupe. He was even actively involved
with the cultural movement of the I.P.T.A. as a choreographer
and dance artiste.
He was the founder, director and chief choreographer of
'Ragini,' the exclusive dance institute in Calcutta. He
founded this institute in 1965. During the inaugural ceremony
of the Asiad in New Delhi, Asit Chatterjee had played
a significant role as the choreographer of the dance programme
produced by the West Bengal Government. In the U.S.A.,
he was highly honoured as a celebrated choreographer at
the Tagore's Festival. During this period, he also visited
Canada and U.K. where he gave some spectacular performances.
As a guest professor in the 'Tagore School of Dance' (both
in U.S.A. and U.K.), Asit Chatterjee conducted some special
workshops on dance and delivered some unique lectures
anent to this subject. He also played a significant role
as a teacher in the dance workshops conducted by the Texas
University.
Asit Chatterjee proved his mettle as a choreographer in
several feature films tele-serials, plays and even puppet-shows.
He did a remarkable job by choreographing a dance drama
with the children of the backward tribes and communities.
It was a feast for the eyes to see the ruestic boys and
girls staging Rabindranath's 'Chandalika,' in their regional
language. He was not only a popular professor of dance
in the Rabindra Bharati University but also worked witheclat
for some time as a professor in the Biswa Bharati. This
renowned dance personality has served as an honourable
member of the 'West Bengal Nritya Natya-O-Sangeet Academy.'
He even acted as a member of the jury board of Calcutta
Doordarshan and the deputy chairperson of West Bengal
Dance Group Federation. His spouse Mrs. Gayatri Chatterjee
is also a renowned dancer. She is a professor of Indian
Dance in the Rabindra Bharati University.
