  Computer Vision Syndrome :  
     

 

Human eyes were designed to support our hunter ancestors to enable them to spot or to hunt or gather things at a distance. Even 20 years ago most children used to play out side , and their distant vision was more important. But the visual skill that served them , differ quite a lot from those we need in today’s modern society. Today most of us work at the computer either at house or at school or in office each day for hours. Sitting in front of computer and staring at the computer screen is causing vision problem that were not known to us before. Today it is a “near point world” and we need to be aware of the vision problem associated with computer work.
Computer visual stress may bring in many direct and indirect symptoms which can be grouped under COMPUTER VISION SYNDROM when the individual works more than two hours at a stretch on the computer . These include -

  • Eye fatigue.
  • Headache
  • Dry eyes
  • Photophobia
  • Inability to maintain focus
  • Changes in colour perception
  • Pain in or around the eyes
  • Neck and shoulder discomfort.
   
CVS affects millions of office workers, students and even retired people today. But the tragedy is that it is not yet a diagnosed disease like glaucoma and many others. Sometimes its occurrence in adults is little known, patients experience delayed or mis-diagnosis and inappropriate invasive management. With a little effort and understanding of the syndrome, we can manage CVS victims by advising them to -

1. Get a computer eye exam.
2. Use proper lighting.
3. Minimize glare.
4. Adjust the brightness of your computer screen.
5. Blink more often.
6. Exercise and stretch your eyes.
7. Take frequent breaks.
8. Modify your workstation
