Stress Management

It is a perception of an individual as a result of challenges he/she faces in his/her environment. If the person feels he won’t be able to cope with the challenge then it becomes a stress. If the person feels he would easily cope with the challenge then it becomes a sense of wellbeing. This concept of stress has been goning on over a few thousand years, Greek philosopher Epictatus who claimed, it is neither things nor situations nor any person causes stress but it is made by the individual through his own perception of his capability. For all performances some degree of anxiety is necessary, in effect, anxiety is the driving force towards performance. It has been shown many times that the gradual increase of level of anxiety increases performance however only up to a point, after which if the anxiety level is driven further, the performance level drops : this is in psychology know as Yearkee-Dotson’s law.

What is Stress?

It is a perception of an individual as a result of challenges he/she faces in his/her environment.

If the person feels he won’t be able to cope with the challenge then it becomes a stress.

If the person feels he would easily cope with the challenge then it becomes a source of wellbeing.

This concept of stress was propounded over a few thousand years back by Greek philosopher Epictatus, who claimed it is neither things nor situations nor any person can cause stress but it is made by an individual through his own perception.

The Processes Involved in producing stress are as follow

Step-1&2: The person firstst faces a situation then his systems responds, in the system there are defences which protects him from adverse effects.

Step-3: Inspite of these some changes happen in his different parts of the body and mind.

Step-4: There are ways of coping with these changes which is called response management.

Step-5: If inspite of all these responses the person’s body or mind fails to cope adequately then symptoms & signs of illness appear.

Step-6: Then the individual starts reacting to this illness manifestation.

Psychological Defences
(Bought Into action)

e.g.1>Denial- Refusing to acknowledge a painful or disturbing fact that it has happened. For example When the husband refuses to acknowledge that his wife has died.

e.g.2>Displacement-The person blame somebody for something which is not acceptable to him when the blamed person is not responsible. Like blaiming the maid for the fault of daughter-in-law.

e.g.3>Dissociation- When the situation becomes quite intolerable then he unawarely switches himself off from the situation, like Amnesia(forgetting the event).

e.g.4>Repression-It is the most successful defence against all anxieties. It is keeping them outside of consciousness level.

e.g.5>Regression- When the person can not cope with the situation appropriate to his level of development then he start’s behaving like a child, so that people may not make any further demand on him.

e.g.6> Reaction formation- The person developers a way of presenting a picture externally which is opposite of what he is experiencing internally. Like outer word expression of humility when he is filling extremely aggressive inside.

e.g.7> Rationalization- Trying to give a presentable excuse avoiding the real reason.

e.g.8> Projection- Accuse some one for ones own faillings.

e.g.9> Sublimation- Devote the energy in an acceptable channel the urges which are not liked by the society. Like taking on boxing to deal with aggressive urges.

e.g.10> Identification- To become a copy of the person whom he admires.

Prepare your children to deal with mistakes.

For children a lot of stress comes from the fear of making mistakes, REWIREMIND says, remind your kids that “every time they will not get success and every thing they will not do right but it won’t matter much”.

And also, taking a good decision is an important skill to learn, the skill that might be even more important is learning, how to come out of a bad decision.

REWIREMIND  suggests, help your child to learn to figure out the steps after having made a bad decision or mistake. Help them figure out how to come out and move on.
