About Us :

mallhar is essentially a school of music imparting scientific training in music, dance and art to students of all ages. Today it is on its 53rd year. For all these years the institute has tried hard to gain a position among the popular cultural institutes of Calcutta. Beginning with a small number of students and teachers, it has moved from strength to strength in all its cultural endeavours.

The Inception – Initially Mallhar came as a concept in the minds of a group of young mumsic lovers and musicians, most of whom were members of an amateur music group called “The Serenaders”. Every member felt the need to come under one roof, where they could together shape themselves into better musicians of the future. This idea was translated into an organization – some enterprising members, with the support of encouraging parents and well wishers started their first voyage. They had a dream in their hearts and the courage to turn it into reality. They had their address at 36A, Nandan Road, Bhawanipur, Near Shiv Mandir, Kolkata - 700 025, in 1957. Apart from this centre which is still in vibrant note, later it added another centre at 22/1, Gariahat Road, Golpark, Kolkata – 700 019. At these two centers, it imparts training in Classical music, Rabindra Sangeet, Instrumental Music, Classical dance in all forms and also Contemporary  dance together with painting, sculpture and other forms of fine arts. Mallhar holds annual functions every year with its students and it performs on the medias like T.V. and Radio.

At its nascent stage, the chief patron was
Sri A. N. Roy, who provided financial and intellectual support for Mallhar's foundation. The founder members of Mallhar were Jayanta Ray, Provash Dutta, Bidyut Banerjee, Shyamal Dutta Ray and Bhaskar Mitra. Convincing guardians to admit their wards into a sapling like Mallhar was no easy matter. Some members actually encouraged their sisters and relatives to join classes in order to make Mallhar sail. With this the voyage began. Now it has grown into a big institution with more than 200 hundred students. It has the pride of having eminent teachers from all the chapters of culture to train the young students.

The first lessons began on the 16th of August, 1957. Sujit Nath, the pioneer of Hawaiian guitar and an eminent keyboard (piano) exponent, was to teach four young starry-eyed students. Dwijen Mukherjee, the well-known Rabindra Sangeet exponent, held the first vocal lessons on the next day. The other founder teachers of Mallhar were Ruby Dutta (Kathak), Balaram Pathak (Sitar), Sumitra Sen (Rabindrasangeet)  and Chinmoy Lahiri (classical vocal). Mallhar is now affiliated under Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh. It holds  its examinations regularly.
