In
the flights of birds I have found more passion than I could ever find in the
natural world.
My
paintings are of birds, of willingness to fly and then the grounds are still
there pulling me down towards some rational world which we call everyday life. I
am not here to escape nor to wander about in some nomadic fashion, nor to give
meaning to some maniacal passion of mine to resurrect a segment of the human
race and call myself a messiah. I, in my work call myself a simple being as
simple as my birds.
My
father, Shri Bikash Bhattacharjee, painted a different life, a life he so
generously donated towards raising my brother and me through this journey.
In
the halls of our house, in his studio I have seen him work, blinded for hours
towards the world outside and then he was not my father, nor some painter who
was renoqned but someone like a hawk flying above the clouds hunting for some
magical world of paints and wonder.
My
schooling was quite dreamlike, studying Bengali I was brought up in a culture
that is very much Bengali but my father always did try to bring the whole world
to us.
In
my college years through poetry I found more words to paint with than words to
write sentences, Though I have published some of my work, still there is
immaculate joy in that unfettered first moment of creation which success in the
professional world can never really appease.
My
final years under an institution doing my masters, I spent studying the varied
richness of the Bengali literary world and there I found my true colours, the
varied worlds I could reach that was locked away, even harder to imagine without
the guidance of the many masters of the Bengali literary heritage.
In
the end my life has been an honour, a privilege to have been trained by a great
master like my father and though I have not chosen to follow in his footsteps as
per his techniques are concerned, however, in my life he has indeed been a
guide, a mentor a true inspirer in my day to day world as well in my work.
On
my own I have wandered searching for my footing in the world of art, and to my
surprise there is none to find. In the vast expanded of its eccentric domain I
have been looking at great masters of paint, cinema, music and the varied worlds
of art to discover my birds are now greater magicians of flight, becoming
brighter, more energetic in that springtime of inspiration.
In
birds I have more footing in flight, than in soil and thus my paintings are of
birds and not men who cling to the ground. They have been my guide, my
conscience, and they are still guiding me, and I believe the day I shall return
back to the world of men from my journey, I shall return to the people with
handful of richness, of colours, of poetry, of the limitless flights of birds as
tokens of my gratitude. Oh! Yes, gratitude for the indescribable kindness that
has been, life.
