PROF. SANDEEP DEB has been in North Calcutta in a renowned family devoted to the Arts and culture of music. His paternal grandfather was the great grandson of Late Ramdulal Deb (Sirkar), one of the pioneer in Indian Trade and Commerce. It would not be out of place to mention here that his paternal grandmother was the youngest sister of the Biplabi (Hero) Jatin Das of Bengal.

 

He had his first lessons in the field of Music to his elder sister. After that he came in contact with Sri Subodh Nandy and learned Tabla. In course of time he had his lessons from “Guru” Pandit Nanku Maharaj a renowned Tabla player of Banarasi Gharana. In course of his learning he came in close contact with respected Pandit Kanthe Maharaj, Pandit Anokhelal. Almost all the Indian fame artists took part in many performances held in his residence.

 

He joined All India Music conference held in Sree Cinema Hall as a guest artist, later on he took part in All India Music conferences like Sadarang Sangeet Sammelan, Tansen Sangeet Sammelan, North Calcutta Sangeet Sammelan, Banga Sanskriti Sangeet Sammelan, All India Sangeet Samaj, etc. He showed his excellence as Solo Tabla performance as well as an accompanist, he was well praised by the audience and was acknowledged by many artists including artists of Kathak Dance and Dhrupad / Dhammer, Vocalist, among those the names of Ustad Vilayet Khan, Imrat Khan, Bhadur Khan, Pandit V. G. Jog, Gengubai Hangle, Pandit Vinayak Roa Pattabardhan, Girija Debi, Hariprasad Chourasia, Pravin Sultana, etc.

 

He is an artist of All India Radio since 1975. And also invited in National Programme of musi at Delhi Television. At present he is an established artist of Varanasi Gharana, the every characteristic of his Gharana, is to play tabla with open fingers, with perfect tal and loy. He had received Journalism award as a Best Tabla player in 1968 and 1969.

 

He had also received “Indira Gandhi” award in 1987. In tabla “Farrad” a type of bandish was first (invented) introduced by Pandit Baiju Maharaj of Benaras the grandfather of Pandit Nanku Maharaj. A chip of old block, magnificent in style and techniques, charming both in appearance an action worthy disciple of worthy Guru Pandit Nanku Maharaj of Varanasi Gharana.
