The Anglo Indians of Calcutta

The Anglo-Indian teache meets her pupil and friends : from Aparna Sen's 36 Chowringhee Lane.

Although a small minority in the population of India, the Anglo Indian community holds a unique position in India. They are descendants from European patrilineal heritage. They were isolated from the masses because they were well versed in English language and at home with western ways. While in the late 18th century, the British made efforts to turn them, but in the mid 19th century they became important in the British scheme of things. Again, by the turn of the century, with due emphasis on Indianization, they suffered a set back.

Today, the community has made its identity in Calcutta through its social practices, charitable institutions and the schools run by them. They have adapted to the Indian environment and have also influenced other communities. They popularized western music and the sports of quizzing not only in Calcutta but the whole India. Derik, Barry and Neil O'Brien are household names among quirk enthusiasts.

The Anglo Indian women may be called pillars of their community survival. They carry out secretarial duties in offices, nursing and teaching. There are few of  them recognizable on Calcutta streets because they will to identity with the total life of the city which is home for them.
