About Sankalpa Nrityayan :

Sankalpa Nrityayan started its journey from 7th September,2004. Today, it is one of the premiere Odissi Dance Institutes in Kolkata.

Here the learners are taught the basics of classical dance with utmost care, guiding their way to perfection. Along with dance, the institute emphasizes physical exercise which is very important to tone the body. Care is taken so that they get clear idea of different Taals and Raagas which form the pillar of dance. From the very beginning students are given lessons on the origin of Odissi Dance, they are told about the famous Odissi Dancers and their works, as well as the current scenario of classical dance in India and abroad.  Gradually they are taught about the make-up, costume, stage craft and other necessary things intricately linked to Odissi Dance that makes a dancer complete.

Sankalpa Nrityayan occasionally organizes workshops to enhance the students' learning and they are encouraged to give audience to good performances in the city.

Sankalpa Nrityayan is a government registered organization under ‘The West Bengal Societies Registration Act. 1961 and affiliated with ‘Pracheen Kala Kendra’, Chandigarh.

Productions :

Our creative team has given birth to several dance dramas of our own which is an exquisite exploration of our tradition and cultural heritage.

  • Partha Priya : A dance drama based on The Mahabharata. It deals with the story of Arjuna, the great warrior and his three wives - Draupadi, Subhadra and Chitrangada
  • Tuhu Mama Madhava : This dance drama takes the audience to Vrindavan to witness the eternal love between Radha and Krishna. It includes the immortal songs of Rabindranath Tagore's Bhanusimher Padavali and compositions from Gita Govinda by poet Jayadev.
  • Selfish Giant: The young dancers perform this dance drama based on Oscar Wilde's story.
  • Sarater Alo: It is a celebration of the spirit of Durga Puja, the greatest festival in Bengal.
  • Sri Chandi: A devotional piece paying tribute to Devi Chandi, the sorce of power.
  • Parane Baje Banshi: An adaptation of Tagore's Bhanusimher Padavali
  • Stotram : A tribute to Hindu gods and goddesses.
  • Ritu Ranga: Capturing the mood of different seasons
  • Jokhon Brishti Namlo: A celebration of the Monsoon with Tagore’s songs and poems

We have also performed several dance dramas by Rabindranath Tagore. All of them are unique as they are a remarkable amalgamation of Classical Odissi and the style of Tagore, maintaining a rich balance between the two.
