: About Her :

A leading female vocalist of the country, Subhra Guha is regarded as one of the finest female exponents of the Agra gharana. Hailing from a music loving family, Subhra received her early training from Late Shri Satish Bhowmick and subsequently, took advanced training from one of the veterans of the Agra gharana, Late Pandit Sunil Bose. In 1982, she joined ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata where Pandit Sunil Bose was a Guru. For ten years, she received uninterrupted training from him as a scholar of the Academy. Later, she received training and valuable guidance from the stalwarts Late Pandit K G Ginde, Late Pandit D T Joshi and Pandit Vijay Kichlu.

She went on to become a Guru of the Academy between 1992 and 2003 and has recently rejoined the Academy in the same capacity.

Today, Subhra has gained recognition for her thumri renditions in the Poorab Ang. Thumris in the Poorab Ang are of several types: Bol Banao ki, Bol-Baant ki, Ghanakshari and Bandishi thumri. The Benares Poorab Ang style that Subhra follows is that of Siddeshwari Devi, Rasoolan Bai, Badi Motibai and Girija Devi. Her style of rendition displays a mellow blend of vidya, impeccable raagdari and a rich gayaki that is both creative and aesthetically appealing. Her collection of rare thumris, dadras, kajris, chaitis etc. in pure Benares tradition is impressive; as is her exhaustive collection rare ragas and compositions.

A regular artiste of AIR and Doordarshan, Subhra has been performing regularly at prestigious platforms both in India and abroad – most notably in North America, across Europe and throughout Asia. She has also had numerous teaching assignments in the US.
