Excluesive Interview :

Ms. Dolon Roy you waited and wanted to know for long:
She reveals here her many delicate facets unknown to you so far:

Q. What really prompted you into acting? Was it incidental or by choice?
I never dreamt of being an actress. The ambience of the tinsel world never charmed me so much. Probability and my own wish were much more to be a doctor or a professor. As a recitor I appeared on stage since infancy but that was only limited to my fancy. From there the journey to become suddenly actress Dolon Roy, I shouldn’t say it was very pleasant always. But I don’t regret for it now. I am in complete love with it. It’s not an overnight journey. I’ve crossed rung by rung. I’ve stepped into every arena of acting starting from recitation to group theatre, professional theatre, movies, serials even opera theatres. Then it somebody asks me what your first love is. I must say its “theatre”.
My debut in acting is certainly incidental completely unplanned. But acting was in my blood and it was a burning passion in me since childhood. So I was more than glad when I entered into professional arena later.

Q. Say something about your theatrical passion.
At present I’m quite busy with serials, but I can’t resist the temptation of theatre. Just to satiate my passion I do a opera theatre in a year. Other than that I form a small team, create new dramas and perform invitational shows abroad once in a year. That’s how I am in touch with what I like to do most.

Q. Your most popular performances in serials / movies those have catapulted you to name and fame?

Cinema (Movie-Sanghat, 1997 “Director: Pinaki Chowdhury) has brought me enough mass recognition and fetched me national president award. It has given me ample popularity as well which catapulted me to limelight. I’ve got popularity and viewers love for my performances in serials like “Swapner Bazar”, “Kuasha Jakhon”, “Pratighat”, “Bhanga Garar Khela”, “Singha Bahini”. Comparatively recently my acting in “Sonar Harin”, “Nir Bhanga Jhar”, “Ashombhab has appealed to viewers to a great extent and touched them deeply.
Theatre has given me the inspiration to move on in life, the warmth of people. I have been able to observe and probe deeply into peoples mind, in Kolkata, West Bengal, India  and abroad through theatre.

Q. What does it take to sustain for a considerable period in acting?
Acting acumen, of course and sincerity for the work.

Q. Great actors are born or made?
Born, with time, skill and the rest to be sharpened up. It needs to be polished up as well.

Q. What is more important to you? Charm or look?
Charm; because charm beats the look.

Q. Who are the actors you are comfortable to be pared with?
He must be sensitive enough emotionally like me.

Q. How do you see the future of Bengali Film Industry within next 5 years?
Totally governed by the corporate world. It might be a little problem for the old fanatics. But it has it’s own merit at the same time. Only acting prowess is not enough. We need more and more professionalism.

Q. Had you not been an actress, what you would be?
To become a doctor was my ambition in childhood. With time everything changes, my dreams also have changed. Now, I would have been glad to be a tour executive or tour designer as I am tremendous fond of travelling. Interior designing attracts me very much and I am equally passionate about it.

Q. Does enigma enhances attraction, like in case of Greta Garbo or Suchitra Sen?
Might be it was. Days are different now. You just can’t afford to remain enigmatic any more. Show business is now synonymous with Page3. all the actors are inclined to and crazy about it. We know everything about Shilpa Shetty for the sake of Big Brother. Amitabh Bachchan is a regular face in page3. Equation is different now–a-days.

Q. According to you, which is your best performance till date?
To be incredibly honest, I am not content with any of my performances. I think I always can do better. Although “Sanghat”, “Cancer”, “Sonar Harin” are very close to my heart. A constructive discontentment always prevails in me. I always want to emulate myself, always.

Q. Which director brings the best in you?
I have enjoyed working with Mr. Pinaki Chowdhury. I’m grateful to him.

Q. What kind of role you always intend to do most earnestly?
I have a predilection for portraying very assertive and positive characters. I like to depict reformative traits, lovable by people. Sometimes we can’t speak our mind. What we want to. I wish I could express my all pent up  feeling through my on screen characters.

Q. Most difficult character you’ve ever done and why was it challenging?
My character at “Sanghat” was a challenging one. To realise that matured character at my tender age was some what bewildering.
Recently in “Sonar Harin” I’m depicting double role of twin sisters. To make a clear distinction between the two, I find it quite fascinating.
In, “Ashombhav”,  I ‘ve to portray a negative character which is challenging. But altogether I enjoy thoroughly.

Q. Whom do you consider as your mentor? Personally and professionally?
Professionally I’m almost self made. When I came, I was never from a acting lineage. But I strongly believe there is some or other element to pick up from everybody around, be it veterans or new comers. I always get my acting resources from people around me.

Q. Any tips for grooming actors / actress?
Respect elders, respect your work.

Q. As an actor, whom you’d like to be compared with?
            Myself, only myself.

Q. When you portray a character do you follow director or it is your predilection?
I usually follow the creator of the character. Creator has thought of the character originally. So I try to stick to the original contemplation.

Q. When you speak your mind or when you express your beliefs, do you bother whether people around you get upset or not?
I dare to speak my mind where necessary. But sometimes I bother about others. Where my decision hurts other, I bother. But a virago? Certainly I’m not that type.

Q. Do you regret for any lost opportunity?
I repent a lot for not having some coveted things of life. I like songs. But I can’t sing even not got chance to learn it. I love dancing but never got opportunity to have  a professional training. I like children like anything but never got any baby so closely. I’m keeping everything in abeyance for my next birth.  I was lost in pain. desire, frustration and repentance, standing in front of Harvard University in Boston. Only if I could study here - I was talking to myself. This is also due in my next birth. If truly the “Self” in me doesn’t get changed in my reincarnation. I won’t give a second look to this tinsel world any more. Feeling too monotonous, it’s a fake world altogether.
I’ve some attitude problem. My public relations need to be more thorough. Sometimes I stick to my no compromising attitude. I don’t acquiesce to others request very easily. Might be I’ve to pay for it sometimes.

Q. Are you very clear about what you want from life and what is that?
I expect what I deserve and what I must get. I want and expect  proper analysis & valuation of my work. So that, people remember me for days to come.
I sincerely wish to leave a mark in people’s mind as an actor. I want people would value my passion and love for work for a long  long time.

Q. What do you do in your leisure?
I don’t believe in leisure time. Because some or other work keeps me busy always. That can be watering a plant, might be an unfinished novel or may be to see a movie. But sometimes there comes a moment which I would say “lazy time”.  I switch to music then. I am very much fond of old songs be it Bengali or Hindi. Certainly those songs when ‘melody was queen, lyrics was king’, I like just to sit with Tagore’s  “Sanchaita” or “Gitabitan” and recite loudly from them.

Q. Tell us something about some of your exotic traits?
I get too emotional too easily. Certainly it helps me as an actress, I should n’t say it has a negative impact in my flesh and blood life but often invokes bewilderment . If somebody is guided by heart rather than  brain he is bound to face embarrassment  every now and then,  so am I.  I don’t belong the category of  ‘once  bitten  twice shy’ , I trust people, get deceived . Trust again –again get deceived.  I am like this. I simply can’t  mistrust others . I abhor  dishonesty  and dishonest people. I am not over ambitious ,  So I don’t  always need  to tell blatant lies. I discover myself every moment . Always I am amazed and astonished. I enjoy to accost and mingle with new faces but  very few  leave any impression on my mind if there is no tuning with me. Even their name  eludes me with time.

I like travelling, Mad about visiting unknown territories I’ve resolved I’d be a traveller in some time in my life. Understanding  social and personal life of different countries fascinates me a lot.
I like a cloudy afternoon, raindrops on ocean. I love to listen to piano from the late afternoon, in the evening and flute at midnight. When I’m lost in the scenic beauty anywhere. I can hear those music in nature. I then remember Tagore saying to me, “Nature talks to me in pictures and  I answer them in music.”  This happened twice in two places. Till date those are my two most favourite destinations. One in a small calm place near Lockness river in Scotland. Another is a small village “Vilaros Villi”, on the way to Mt. “Titli”, little distant from Zurich, Switzerland. I stayed for a day and a night over there. If I’ve to recall the most beautiful moment in my life, It’s in a small village near Nashville in USA. A quite big shrine of all Indian God, encompassed by mountains. Non resident Indians go there in the weekend to affer prayer. It sounds a little strange but ambience is truly one of its kind.
