Dr. Dipak Chandra was well known as an author not only in West Bengal but all over the globe. His creatively imaginative novels (85 so far) based on varied and interesting anecdotes of Indian mythology are immensely readable and popular among all sections of people and have made a Special Genre of Bengali Literature. Among some of his best known novels are: Srikrishna Purushottam, Ramer Agnatabas, Agnigarbha Khandav, Jadi Radha Na Hoto, Aami Tomaderi Sita, Sachal Jagannath sri Krishna Chaitamya. Nivedito Nibedita, Dotara, Chakrabuha, Pouranik Prem Katha etc. He had also written several social novels and collections of short stories, apart from thought-provoking articles and books on literary and other topics, with equal ease and ability. Recently the Dey's Publishing, Kolkata, has brought out an anthology on his life and works containing articles of eminent litterateurs under the editorship of Dr. Pallav Sengupta.

The author made his debut in writing in 1972 with the publication of Manoj Basu: Jiban O Sahitya (M.C. Sarkar and Sons, Kolkata), based on the life and work of the celebrated novelist. He subsequently took his Ph.D degree on his creative research on Modern Bengali Drama, based on the life and work of the modern playwright. His first mythological novel Indraprasthe Srikrishna was published seven years later (1979) and was an immediate success. The author did not have to look back since then. In 2003 Dr. Chandra founded the Indian Mythological Research Centre, Kolkata, along with a few like-minded persons and has since then been ably conducting the work of the Centre as its Secretary and editing its journal Pouraniki, which has earned enormous critical accolade.

Dr. Chandra was born at Bharasimla village of Khulna district in. now Bangladesh. His father Keshab Lal was a teacher and mother Nirupama a homemaker. Among his two brothers, Manaskumar became an engineer and Pranabkumar,  a pediatrician. Immediately after the partition, Dipak Chandra's family came over to West Bengal and settled down at Dandirhat under Basirhat Municipality. The initial years in the new locale and milieu were extremely hard for the family. Dipak first worked in the Agarpara Jute Mill and then in the Durgapur Steel Plant. Subsequently he took up the job of a teacher in a school at Dandirhat N. K. u. S. Niketan. There he got the feel of writing for the first time by editing a local magazine, Sphulinga. Since 1980 the author has been living in his own house at Dum Dum with wife Ila, son Saptarshi, daughter-in-law Jayanti and granddaughter Srijanti. Dr. Chandra's daughter Sampurna is married to Saumitra Bhowmick, an engineer by profession, and has two sons, Piku and Prithu. The author's wife Ila has been a constant source of inspiration to him for all his literary pursuits and familiar success. |
