FAQs :

  • Is my child too young to wear glasses?
No, Glass correction should be used as early as possible to prevent amblyopia.

  • What is Amblyopia?
If a child ,in developing age ,has need for glasses but either escapes detection or does not use a correction, his eye to brain pathway does not develop so that the vision becomes fixed at a lower(below normal level),that cannot be corrected by any means in adult life.

  • Is Amblyopia irreversible?
No, it can be corrected with glass/contact lenses & proper exercise before the age of thirteen years approximately.
    .
  • If I need vision correction yet do not wish to use glasses or contact lenses, what needs to be done?
If you are a fit case for LASIK then this procedure will give you clear vision without glass/lens.

  • Is LASIK a serious surgery?
Not really. It is more of a procedure than a surgery.

  • My eyes appear red all the time. How can this be corrected?
Most frequent cause of this is ocular allergy & can be treated with eye drops.

  • If I wear contact lenses will my power be arrested?
No. Increase in glass power is growth related & Contact lenses do not have any impact on this.

  • I have been diagnosed to have Glaucoma. Will I go blind?
No. With proper treatment glaucoma can be arrested & most patients retain good vision.

  • I underwent Perimetry test for glaucoma once. Now my doctor wants to repeat the test. Is it needed?
Yes,Perimetry is used to confirm/disprove the diagnosis of glaucoma as well as to follow its progression, so it has to be repeated regularly to assess the condition of the disease.

  • If I have glaucoma, how long do I need to use eye drops?
Lifelong. Except in case of Angle closure Glaucoma treated with LASER or any glaucoma following successful surgery for glaucoma.

  • If I have diabetes, does it mean I cannot undergo surgery for cataract?
Not at all .If your Random Blood Sugar at the time of surgery is below 200 mg/dl, it can be undertaken safely & with ease.

  • If I use thick glasses is cataract surgery contraindicated?
No. A few precautions may need to be taken.

  • If I have lenses implanted in my eye, I do not need to use glasses any more?
No. Even after IOL implant Glasses are needed either for distance or near vision & in a few cases for both. Although multifocal IOLs have been developed with a view to make post surgical glass use redundant, many require some kind of correction even with these lenses.

  • Is Manual Phaco & Phaco surgery the same thing?
Not at all. Manual Phaco(Technically called SICS) is a suture less (without stitch) cataract surgery where a 6mm incision is made & the Cataract is removed manually & a large rigid Lens is placed. It needs injections below the eye at start of surgery, bleeding occurs, patient cannot use water in eye for 15 days at least & in most cases dependence on glass is more.Phaco surgery usually needs 3 small openings ,do not bleed, most patients do not need any injections, cataract is emulsified by ultrasound ,sucked out & a soft foldable lens is injected through the main opening. Patient can have a normal life in 7 days & need for glasses is much less.SICS is relatively inexpensive but the loss in terms of days without work & slow recovery makes Phaco more cost effective.
  • Can vision be guaranteed in case of Phaco Surgery?
As with all Surgeries there is a failure rate. This varies but in competent hands it is around 2 percent. No doctor can guarantee an outcome of any medical/surgical treatment.

  • Are expensive injections in the eye a must in retinal disorders due to diabetes?
No. They are used only in some cases where tests indicate that they will help visual recovery.

  • Is dizziness due to eye problems?
No. Eye problems can manifest as headache but rarely as dizziness.

  • In Macular degeneration is blindness inevitable?
No. Unfortunately though there are several treatment modes most recovery is limited. However,Low Visual Aids frequently help to maintain some near vision.

  • Is it possible to correct squint without surgery?
Some squints if detected early can be corrected by glasses & exercise. Others need surgery. External Cosmetic correction can be effected by Glass with prisms.

  • If one child has Retinoblastoma (cancer of the eye) what are the chances that his/her next sibling will be affected by the same disease?
The risk depends on Parents chromosomal status. If parent has cancer predisposing RB1 mutation, risk to siblings of index case is 50 percent. If parents have no such pattern risk is 3-5 percent. If index case has mosacism ,risk is negligible. If genetic testing is not available, risk varies according to whether lesion is uni/bilateral & presence of family history. In absence of positive family history risk is assumed to be negligible.
