RABINDRANATH
TAGORE'S novel Noukadubi has been captured on celluloid
earlier. That was several years ago when director Ajay Kar worked on the
novel. Now documentary filmmaker Abhijit Chattopadhyay is filming the
novel. It is his first feature film. The cast includes Soumitra Chatterjee
(Annada), Arindam Sil (Akhhay), Locket Chatterjee (Hemnolini), Bhaswar
Chatterjee (Ramesh) and others. This is the second Tagore novel that will
appear on the big screen in recent times after Rituparno Ghosh's Chokher
Bali. HT City caught up with the director during the shooting of the film at a house on Rashbehari Avenue. Pro-' duced by Rajendra Churiwala under the banner of Mangalam Creations, the shooting of the film that commenced a couple of days ago will continue till August-September. The director plans to release the film sometime late this year. Why this sudden interest in doing a feature film at this stage of his career? Chattopadhyay says he never wanted to do a feature film. "I was inspired by my producer to do a film on this novel," says Chattopadhyay, who has earlier done a number of noteworthy documentaries like Graven Image, In Search of Indian Theatre and others. He feels that the novel has a lot of commercial elements to it, which will draw the audiences. "Though, it's backdrop is traditional the audiences will identify with the situations in the story," he adds. Chattopadhyay plans to shoot out doors too, most probably at Taki. Music is an integral part of the film and all the numbers will be Ra-bindrasangeet. Chattopadhyay is assisted by renowned actress and director Sudeshna Roy. |
