Fibroadenomas of the breasts are small, solid, rubbery, noncancerous,
harmless lumps composed of fibrous and glandular tissue. Because
breast cancers can also appear as a lump, doctors usually
recommend a tissue sample ( biopsy) to rule out cancer. Unlike
typical lumps from breast cancer, fibroadenomas are mobile
with clearly defined edges and can be felt easily with the
palm of the hand.
Malignant breast tumors are operated usually by General Surgeons
and for reconstruction of breast Plastic Surgeons are called
for. But I feel that benign breast tumors e.g. Fibroadenomas
should be operated by Plastic Surgeons, because in these cases
only the mass is removed without total ablation of the breast
and cosmesis in these cases are of utmost importance. Repair
by a Plastic Surgeon will definitely produce a cosmetically
better scar.
