Maria's Day School (MDS), South Howrah, is an English Medium, co-educational Institution, presently upto Class VIII, following the syllabus of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi and is likely to be upgraded to 10th/12th standard in coming years.
 
The School is run by the Kalpana Datta Foundation (KDF), a Charitable Educational Trust. A Governing Board comprising of distinguished educationists and public figures are the mainstay of the management of the school. The Management holds the experience of establishing and running successfully a number of schools and colleges of repute.
 
MDS is located at Podrah-Chunabhati of Howrah district, connected with roadways, only 3 Kms. away from Vidya Sagar Setu, the marvellous stayed cable bridge connecting Kolkata, the cultural capital of the country and its sister city Howrah. It is 8 Kms. from Howrah Station and 2 Kms. from Santragachi Railway Station. The sprawling campus with exquisite greenary is ideally suited for educational activities. The eco-friendly ambience with apex infrastructure and dedicated teaching faculty is the key point of the school.

SESSION
 
The school academic session extends from April to March. The academic year consists of two terms; each term ends with half yearly and annual examinations respectively. In the first term, two unit tests as well as in the second term, one unit test is held. Promotion is granted to students on the basis of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation System of work throughout the academic year.
 
Promotion is refused to a student who does not attend at least 75% of classes held in one academic year.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE
 
Admission is offered strictly on merit. .
In pre-primary classes, i.e. in Nursery, Higher Nursery and KG classes, admission is carried out on first come first serve basis; No test is taken; but only child's normal development as well as physical alertness is observed. Students are admitted to nursery.

Higher Nursery and KG during the month of Nov./Dec. and also in the month of April/May. The age of admission in Nursery in years is 3 + , Higher Nursery is 4+ and KGis5 + , For the Students in pre-primary classes, i.e. in Nursery, Higher Nursery and KG., promotion to higher classes is allowed twice a year, if found suitable. In this way, the age of a student may be 5+ in class I instead of 6 + , if admitted at 3+ in nursery. This system of admission and promotion prevents loss of year for a student and early promotion for the deserving and capable student to next higher class. From Class I onwards, admission is carried out through admission tests only.

Admission forms are issued in the month- of November-December and tests/interviews are carried out on subsequent dates as notified from time to time.
For admission from Class II onwards, transfer certificate from the school last attended is needed. For all admissions, attested copy of birth certificate of students is required.

CO-CURRICULAR & EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
 
Co-curricular activities include among others, annual sports, scouting, debating, quiz contest, education tours etc. Extra curricular activities include Art, painting, outdoor games etc. Annual sports is held every year.

Students may avail school transport, School bus plies to commute students. Students may also avail transport through school vans.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
 
Boys : Navy blue terricotton or cotton trousers, white terricotton or cotton shirts, black derby pattern shoes with laces and white socks, navy blue blazers, neck-tie.

Girls : Navy blue "A" line skirt and white cotton or terricotton blouses (Class V onwards), Navy blue "A" line tunics upto class IV, black shoes and white socks, navy blue blazers, Neck-tie. Sikh boys are required to wear light blue turbans of phatkas.

EXAMINATION SYSTEM
 
In pre-primary section, no sharp examination for promotion to higher classes is taken; but students are graded according to progress.
From Class I onwards, the examination system is based on continuous and comprehensive evaluation system during whole of the academic year.

A student getting grade E in one or two subject(s), is required to take retest in the concerned subject(s) and is promoted to next higher class only if the student gets a grade above "E"(A-D) in the concerned subject. Students getting grade "E" in more than two subjects is not promoted to the next class.

Students who misses an examination, is not allowed to appear for it at a later date. A student failing in a class for two consecutive years is asked to withdraw.
