What is TLH ?
TLH or Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy is removal of the entire uterus through the laparoscope.

Is any part of the uterus left behind after TLH operation ?
All parts of the uterus are removed in TLH. No part is left behind.

What anaesthesia is used for TLH operation ?
General anaesthesia has to be used in all cases of TLH operation.

Are ovaries removed during TLH ?
No, they are not removed if you do not wish to have them removed. Please read the question & answers below to find out more on this subject.

Are ovaries difficult to remove during TLH ?
No, removal of ovaries is easy in most cases of TLH and no additional time is required.

What should I do with MY ovaries during TLH operation ?
Our suggestions:
1. If ovaries look diseased, it is better to remove them at any age.
2. If your age is 45 years or more, it is better to remove ovaries even if they look normal.
3. If you are between 40 - 45 years, it is your personal choice. Please read the information leaflet on 'MENOPAUSE' before taking a decision.
4. If you are below 40 years, it is usually better to keep the ovaries (provided they appear healthy).

Do I have to take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if I get my ovaries removed during TLH ?
Not necessarily so. There are both advantages and disadvantages of taking HRT; but the advantages are much more than disadvantages. You can take this decision later on as well. Please read the information leaflet on 'MENOPAUSE'; it will help you take a decision.
