Dr
Protyush Chatterjee was born in the year 1951, in an industrial
town of West Bengal, called Asansol First few years he spent
with his parents in Delhi. Then his parents got transferred
to Asansol. and Protyush also moved with them. He is the 3rd
son of Balai & Santikana. His schooling was in Eastern
Railway school in Asansol, from where he passed higher secondary
examination in 1967. He was admitted in Calcutta National
Medical College that year in MBBS course, and passed out in
1973. (The examination was, however, held in 1975. because
of widespread disturbances due to Naxalite movement).
After doing senior residentship in general surgery for one-year-and-a-half,
and then in orthopaedics for six months, he joined D Ortho
course of Calcutta University in 1979, and passed in 1980.
He then joined West Bengal Health Services. He did his MS
(Orthopaedics) from Calcutta Medical College in 1989. He took
voluntary retirement from service in 2001 and joined Bhattacharya
Orthopaedic & Related Research Centre in Calcutta, a hospital
established by the legendary Dr Sailendra Bhattacharyya.
His wife, Dr Chitra was one year junior to him in college.
She is the assistant professor of Community Medicine in Calcutta
Medical College. Together they have a son, Rajarshi, and a
daughter, Mandovi.
Apart from trauma surgery, Dr Chatterjee has special interest
in paediatric orthopaedics and sports injury. He is the chairman
of the medical section of Rehabilitation Centre for Children,
Calcutta. This is a hospital run by NGO and deals with paediatric
deformities. He is also the vice president of West Bengal
Association of Sports Medicine.
