An All India Association of medical  professionals was formed in the All India Medical Conference held in Calcutta  at National Medical College on 28th December, 1928, with Dr. G.V. Deshmukh as  President and Dr. Sir Nil Ratan Sarkar and Bharat Ratna Dr. B.C. Roy as Vice  Presidents. The head office was in Calcutta.  In 1930, the Association was renamed as Indian Medical Association ( IMA ). 
                 
              Upto the session 1933-34, there were no State or Local branches of IMA. In the  1934-35 Session, precisely on 29th June, 1935, first Local Branch of IMA was  formed at Calcutta  and was named as IMA Calcutta branch. The first president was late Col. Prof.  K.K. Chatterjee and first Secretary was Dr. Girin Banerjee. The branch has  completed 75 years on 29th June, 2010.
               
              IMA Calcutta Branch has many luminaries in its membership. It has given many  National Presidents of IMA, namely Dr. B.C. Roy, Sir Nil Ratan Sarkar, Dr. K.S.  Roy, Dr. Capt. P.B. Mukherjee, Dr. A.C. Ukil, Dr. B.P. Tripathi, Dr. Jyotirmoy  Majumdar, Dr. Bhaskar Roy Choudhury and Dr. Sudipto Roy. There are many others  who served the association with utmost dedication and commitment but could not  become National President. 
              Diamond Jubilee of the branch was celebrated on 10th and 11th August,1996 in a  befitting manner. It was inaugurated by His excellency Governor of West Bengal  Shri K.V. Ragunath Reddy in the presence of many dignitaries.
               
              The branch is now preparing for Platinum Jubilee celebrations.  |
