Cancer Incidence and pattern in Kolkata and West Bengal And treatment facilities

Cancer being predominantly a disease of old age and rich life style, its incidence is increasing as people are now living older and as more people are adopting urban life style. Compared to western and developed countries, the cancer incidence in India is still lower in general but in the large metropolises the rate and pattern has begun to resemble western world. The cancer incidence rate is lower in the rural population and the pattern is also somewhat different. In rural areas, people have more cancers of the types that are related to bad hygiene and chronic ill health, like oral cancers and uterine cervical cancers.
The highest incidence in cancer in India is reported from Mizoram in North East India , the cause of which can be linked to existence of three principal known causes of cancer, rich and heavily salted semi cooked diet and alcohol, bad personal hygiene, and genetic causes. The incidence rate i.e., the number of new cancers occurring in a geographical area in a year, is expressed statistically as the AAR (annual age adjusted rate) per one lakh of population, which means that if the AAR for say cancers in female in Kolkata is 114, then 114 new cancer cases will occur in every one lakh of women in Kolkata every year. From the table below one can have an idea about relative incidence in Kolkata and other major cities.

The major sites affected in Kolkata are lung (16.3%), mouth (7.1%), larynx (5.9 %), pharynx (5.7%), liver (4.8%), and stomach (4.6%) in males and breast (22.7%), cervix (17.5 %), gall bladder (6.4%), ovary ( 5.8%), lung (3.9%). Recent unpublished data has indicated a slight shift to the above demography and also a lowering of cancer incidence in Kolkata but the trend towards a greater incidence of breast cancer and gall bladder cancer in females and lung and prostate cancer in males is maintained.

We do not have detailed and reliable data from the districts of West Bengal as yet, but the incidence rate should be similar to the rate seen in Barshi, which is a rural area. In districts, the incidence of uterine cervical cancer is higher than breast cancer in females and oral cavity cancer in males, particularly in the coastal area of Midnpore.

Facilities

Diagnosis

Diagnostic facilities for initial diagnosis and staging are available in most of the district towns and some sub divisional towns through out West Bengal. Sophisticated techniques that use nuclear medicine are available at present only in Kolkata. For more advanced biochemical testing some institutions in Kolkata work in tandem with bigger institutions in Delhi and Mumbai to get their samples tested.

To counter nausea, use antiemetics liberally. If you are in a hospital ward, avoid watching other patients when they vomit. That itself might trigger nausea and vomiting. Nausea and loss of appetite are common symptoms but they should go away once the treatment is stopped. Should they persist, consult your doctor.
