| About Pinki Chaudhuri

Pinaki
Chaudhuri (1940) from his very childhood had a bent towards fine
arts which took shape in learning to play the "TABLA".
He became a disciple of the famous Late Ustad Kermatullah Khan at
a very tender age and soon blossomed into a child prodigy by winning
laurels in numerous competitions. His father being a strict disciplinarian
ensured that education should play an important role. |
| |
 |
Pinaki was virtually isolated
from the world of performing arts for a period of approximately
one and half decade during which period he gave up playing
the 'Tabla. In 1977, he emerged as a producer of films and
produced two films namely "SURYASAKSHI" and "FATHER".
Then after a gap of few years, Pinaki produced and directed
"CHENA ACHENA" starring Tanuja, Soumitra Chatterjee,
Amol Palekar in the lead roles in the year 1982. The venture
was a commercial success. This was followed by two more feature
films produced and directed by him; "APON GHARE"
starring Moonmoon Sen, Prasenjit, Subhendu Chatterjee and
Sumitra Mukherjee and "MANDANDA" starring Urmi Chakraborty,
Benjamin Gilani, Alok Nath, Biplab Chatterjee, Sunil Mukherjee,
Tarun Kumar in the stellar roles. |
|
|
| |
| In the year 1990, Pinaki
targeted a wider viewership by directing a Hindi Telefilm "NARAK"
for the National Network of Doordarshan. This was followed by Hindi
Tele-serial "ARAKSHANIYA"
in 1992 and Hindi Telefilm "'BALIDAN"
in 1993 for National Network. |
| |
| In the year 1994 he
deviated from Television and directed a feature film "KAKABABU
HAYRAY CAYLANE" produced jointly by National
Film Development Corporation and Doordarshan.
This was followed by Bengali Telefilm "ATIKRAM"
which was telecast more than fifty times in a span of six years in
various channels of Doordarshan. |
| |
| It will not be out of
place to mention that with each directorial venture Pinaki showed
more maturity and understanding of the media, and each of these productions
starting from "NARAK"
to "ATIKRAM" deftly
dealt with woman characterisation, their psychology and also their
fight for liberation. This was followed by further two Telefilms "'WAZOOD"
and "EK BAR PHIR"
dealing with themes centred around a strong woman characters. |
| |
In
the later part of 1996, Pinaki produced & directed a Bengali
feature film "SANGHAT"
based on a story by Dibyendu Palit, a wellknown novelist.
This film bagged two prizes in the National Awards 1997 organised
by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Govt. of
India. The film was awarded the RAJAT KAMAL (Silver Lotus)
for the 'Best feature film in Bengali language and another
RAJAT KAMAL as a producer depicting woman's struggle for social
justice and liberation'. The heroine of the film Dolan Roy
was awarded the 'Jury's Special Prize for the Best Actress.
This film "SANGHAT"
has virtually brought about a full circle in a span of two
decades in Pinaki's effort of film-making which not only provides
good entertainment but food for thought also. |
 |
|
| |
| The viewers expect a
lot from him, and Pinaki says, "I am not yet happy with what
I have done. The best is yet to come. It will be a story, which will
be a mirror of our society and..... let us wait and see". |
