Familia
was established in 1977 by Mr.
K. C. Thomas. From the very beginning Familia
had a policy to save homeless and abandoned children
and raise them in a family environment with foster
parents, brothers and sisters, uncles and aunties.
Familia was an effort to provide the nearest alternative
to a natural family to homeless and unwanted children,
who for various reasons would miss out on normal adoption.
Familia, therefore, was an experiment
in child-care based on a particular philosophy. The
approach was seen at the time as revolutionary, even
utopian, because ordinary orphanages did not offer
to children the total care they needed in order to
be raised in a more conducive environment. It was
daring as it was quite out of step with the Indian
culture.

The
nearest School of renown is approx. fifteen kilometers
from this place. And there is no hope for the emergence
of such a one in this area in the near future. Children
of this locality, even those belonging to the middle
class, have no chance for a good English medium school.
This school will facilitate a qualitative and comprehensive
education to the children of this locality. It will
cater to the total community of children in the Amdanga,
Haringhata and Barrackpore-l Blocks of the North 24-Parganas.
We follow the Delhi based English Medium ICSE stream
of curriculum.
Our dream is to gradually bring up this school to the
level of Class xii. In April 2006 the School started
with six classes from Nursery to Class I. Class II was
added in April 2007. The School will grow one class
per year. (This is because there are no other English
medium School in the vicinity and new students come
mostly from Bengali Medium schools). The School has
already received great response from the surrounding
area which speaks for itself. The motto of Familia School
is: "Aude et Spera", i.e.,
