Perspective
Dental, oral and craniofacial diseases and disorders are
among the most common health problems affecting the people of India
and around the world. These problems are compounded when we notice
disorders from birth defects in the form of cleft lip and palate
to injuries to the head and face resulting to emergency room visits
to devastating head and neck cancers accounting for innumerable
loss of lives. While the fact remains that these deformities can
be easily corrected by surgical means, the people with chronic defects
generally tend to ignore them in view of non availability of any
specialist, high cost etc. In the process only a small fraction
of people suffering from birth disorders and / or disorders arising
from injuries is able to access good surgery and surely the persons
with such defects would like to avail of the treatment as such defects
can be rectified with very little effort.
The craniofacial area includes the base of the skull, the facial
skeleton and underlying soft tissues, the skull vaults and the scalp.
Craniofacial surgery consists of operations on the soft tissues
and bones in the head and face. Though these operations are done
primarily on children born with deformities i.e abnormal shapes
of the head and face, craniofacial surgery also involves repairing
damage caused by serious injuries and abnormal growths such as tumors,
congenital deformities etc.
The need for the hospital
The incidence of craniofacial deformation in our country
is quite high. Quite frequently we come across children and adults
with deformities in the face as well in the cranium. The defects
range from incomplete lips, palate, ugly shape of the noses, jutting
out teeth, genetically inherited unaesthetic skull & shapes
of the face. These defects not only result in impaired functions
of speech, chewing, swallowing & breathing but play a vital
role in the development of the psychological status of the individual
as well of the parents too.
Furthermore, with a increase in number of victims arising from road
traffic accidents , for a city like Kolkata with a population of
over 2 crores , a few trauma care center is a bare necessity. Maxilliofacial
trauma is also very common but unfortunately they are not taken
up properly. Most of the time, they are subjected to maltreatment
and improper care.
In India, there is hardly any specialized facility of this kind.
Some hospitals located in Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai etc have these
facilities in a limited way. Not only in Kolkata but in the whole
Eastern India there is no such specialty place where such kind of
comprehensive time consuming treatment protocol is followed.
Assessing the current situation, a need was, therefore , felt to
establish a hospital in Kolkata which will be the first of its kind
in India.
Objective
•
The aim of this super specialty hospital project is to provide a
real world class facility through services of specialists of multiple
disciplines for correcting the various types of acquired craniofacial
deformities, post surgery defects and post injury deformities.
• In view of prevailing socio economical constraints our earnest
endeavor will be to provide the treatment within the reach of all
and surely for such people who are not in a position to bear
even this cost.
• Apart from creating world class hospital facilities, the
institute will be engaged in research & development in allied
field alongside providing in-house educational training and through
exchange programme to groom up future medical professionals.
