Born
in Kolkata, Phalguni one of the most renowned Tabla and Pakhawaj Players is an
accompanist and Guru (Teacher) of Indian ethnic percussion instruments. He
accompanied both in Tabla and Pakhawaj with the personalities like living legend
Ustad ALI AKBAR KHAN, the violin maestro of North Indian Classical Music, Pandit
RABIN GHOSH, Ustad Gulam Mustafa Khan, Dhyanesh Khan, Sisir Kana Dhar Chowdhury,
Samerendra Nath Sikdar and many others in most prestigious concerts. He also
accompanied with many non-Indian experts in Indian Classical Music to name are
John Myers, Steven Lansberg, Johan Barlow etc. His first tour of USA was in
1988-89 when he had the honour of receiving “AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENT in Tabla as
Guest Artiste” from Maryland University, Baltimore. In India he was awarded by
Bhimsmadev Memorial Trsut and Academy of Arts and Studies in 1993 for his
outstanding skill in Tabla and Pakhawaj. In 2001 he was chosen to perform as
main percussionist for the Documentary film on Sarod maestro Late Pandit RADHIKA
MOHAN MAITREYA.
His
disciples are from though out the world and some of them have already working in
different fields of Music as successful players of percussion instruments
particularly Tabla. Phalguni is also a visiting lecturer of SRFTI (Satyajit Ray
Film & Television Institute)
Phalguni
started training in Tabla under the guidance of his father late Debndra Nath
Acharya at a very early age. Later on learned from late Pandit Kanai Lal Dutta.
After his demise he is disciple of World famous percussionist Pandit SWAPAN
CHOWDHURY for over last two decades.
Phalguni
was also trained by another legendary Guru (Teacher) Late RAJIB LOCHAN DEY for
14 years in Pakhawaj, the ethnic percussion instruments most suitable for
accompaniment wit renferings in DHRUPAD style of Indian Classical Music. A rare
skill possessed by a few percussionists of to day.
Phalguni
an exponent of LUCKNOW GHARANA (Lucknow School of Music) is exceptionally rich
in tune within the rhythm of Tabla and Pakhawaj that made him favourite to the
masters and famous among students of Indian Classical Music.
