SUMITRA
SEN is one of the noted exponents, instrumental in popularising
the melodies of Rabindranath Tagore. Over the last four
decades, she has won the hearts of many music lovers.
Initiated into music at an early age by her mother, Sen
joined Gitabitan for institutional training, followed
by talim from two other famous Tagore exponents, Soumendranath
Tagore and Anadi Kumar Dastidar.

Since
1970, She has been associated with the Rabindra Bharati
University and has retired as the professor and Head of
Department of Rabindra Sangeet. |
She
has been a regular artist of the All India Radio for the
last 50 years not only in Calcutta but all over the country
and one of the privileged few to be associated with Calcutta
Doordarshan from its inception. At present, she is one
of the experts of Bishwa Bharati Music Board. |

Further,
she has also performed in many Bengali films as a playback
singer and cut innumerable discs, cassettes and CDs from
H.M.V., Soundwing, EBI, Atlantis, Raga Music etc. Her
popularity even touched foreign shores as she was invited
by the people of U.K. USA, Canada, Australia, Bangladesh
and other countries where she earned rave reviews feo
her performance.

Sen just completed the golden jubilee of her music career.
Rabindra Sangeet is still part and parcel of her life.
She is now engaged in developing young talent through
'TRIBENI', an institution not only created by her but
also bearing her stamp and style. Many cassettes of renowed
artistes are being recorded under her guidance from H.M.V.
sagarika, etc. H.M.V. awarded her the lifetime achievement
for her outstanding contribution to rabindrasangeet over
last 50 years. She has also received the 'Rajib Gandhi
Memorial award', 'Sharad arghya', Award by West Bengal
Government, lifetime achievement by C.T.V.N. |
