The noted playwright, actor and director SAROJ ROY along with Prof. Subhendu Barik. Samir Basu, Swapan Mukhopadhyay, Sujit Saha. Pallab Ghosh and others formed the Theatre Group NATASENA on May 8 (25  Baisakh), 1971 at Thakurpukur, Kolkata.

 

First Production: BAJIKAR (One-act) and EBONG INDRAJIT on November 6, 1971; Blsanna Sakal (One-act) and Kanchan Ranga on November 7.1971.

 

Total Production: 45 Plays (27 one-act plays).

 

Some of the productions to remember

"HITEY BIPARIT" (one-act) - a farce by Jyotirindra Nath Tagore. 

SURYA NEI SWAPNA ACHHEY (One-act) - protest play against social oppression.

BHAJA GOURANGA KATHA (one-act) - a light comedy, which used to keep audience glued to tilI the curtain fall. 

PATAKAR RANG LAL (one-act) - based on the idea that for social justice, assassination can't be a remedy.

JUJU - Concocted adaptation of three-act plays.

KALIBULI - a comedy written in verse and the technique adopted from the Bengali folk opera.

CHAMANBAHAR - a fantasy based on the idea of Arabian Nights. 

PRATlBIDHITSA - a serious three-act based on the character of Abhimanyu of Mahabharata.

AUGA - some critics call it the best of NATASENA - serio-comic play based on a short story of noted writer Shirsendu Mukhopadhyay. 

DHAR MUNDUR KISSA - a fantastic satire in Opera form based on a story of Leo Tolsto. 

GORUR GARIR HEADLIGHT - a 'Kelenkarious Lacdivorious' play and still one of the most favourites of the audience even after 30 years.

 

Activities: The motto of NATASENA is pure entertainment and to promote social consciousness through theatre, to participate in theatre movement and to enhance the theatrical performances.

 

Other Activities: Very often workshops on theatre on short spells are held to educate the members of NATASENA. Souvenir is published to promote theatre on its foundation day every year.

 

It is also a regular practice of NATASENA to stage its shows for the welfare of the theatre workers, theatre lovers, people in need and also to take part in 'Natyamelas' for raising fund for a good cause and the money thus raised is totally donated to fulfill its commitment to the society in spite of having very little resources.

 

It is only the love and good wishes of the people that NATASENA is carrying on with an individual entity in this troubled time. We bow our heads in gratitude to you.
