RESEARCH

As a result of association in the field of Cancer and Cancer Reasearch, this Institute is now recognised by undernoted authorities and scientific forums :

  1. Recognised as a Research Institute by the Government of India.
  2. A member of UICC(International Union Against Cancer).
  3. A member of Indian Academy of Sciences.
  4. Functions as a database for ICMR(Indian Council of Medical Research).
  5. Chief Institutional collaborator in the ICMR Funded Tumour Registry Programme of Calcutta, being conducted at CNCI.
  6. Recognised as a teaching centre of the National Board of Examination(NBE) - formerly National Academy of Medical Sciences(NAMS) in the subjects of Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine and Radiodiagnosis.
  7. Various dissertation/thesis work for M.Sc and Ph.D students under University of Calcutta and Burdwan are undertaken at this centre. Students from All India Institute of Public Health & Hygiene and from Indian Institute of Business Management carry on their project work on Biochemical Waste Management at this Institute.

    Research activities of the centre are briefly described under the following heads :


    I. Projects undertaken earlier
  • Projects on screening and health education for precancer and cancer of cervix in rural areas of South East 24 Parganas sponsored by ICMR.
  • Population survey, screening and health education regarding oral precancers and cancers in the Pilkhana slum area under Howrah Municipal Corporation sponsored by World Health Organisation(WHO).
  • Cancer Control Programme in different districts of West Bengal sponsored by National Cancer Control Project, Govt. of India and the World Health Organisation(WHO).

    II. Projects just completed

  • Sero-incidence of common viral infection among cancer patients.
  • Prevalence of Hepatitis-B infection among cancer patients in West Bengal.

    III. Ongoing Projects
  • Global trial on Tamoxifen use(ATLAS) organised by Radcliff Infirmary, Oxford, U.K. and financed  by the U.S. Army.
  • Clinical study of Intron - A combination with chemotherapy in intermediate grade Non Hodgekins Lymphoma.
  • Role of Dopamnine in Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.
  • Oxidative damage has a crucial role to play in development of Gastric Ulcer and Cancer - Dr. Mrinalini Bhattacharjee in a collaboration research with Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Jadavpur Calcutta.

    IV. Ongoing thesis for Ph.D
  • Delayed complications of curable cancer - Dr. M. Kar, University of Calcutta.
  • Studies of the biochemical effects of Surgery, Chemotherapy and Radiation on Bone - Dr. Sujal Chandra , University of Burdwan.
  • Study and surveillance of Breast malignancies especially in high risk groups - Dr. Rajat Mukherjee, C.C.W.H.R.I.

  1. Dept. of Public Health, All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health.
    • Risk factor study of breast cancer and associated dietary intake with active intervention.
  2. Dept. of Applied Psychology
    • Psychology assessment of cancer patients.
    • A cross section study of selected psychological variables in a group of female cancer patients(Breast and Cervix). 
  3. Dept. of Home Sciences
    • Food and nutrition in cancers of gastro-intestinal tract.
    • Study on diets in cancers of Urinary Bladder and Kidney.

    VI. Projects being taken up

  • Clinical trials on IM-862(Thymogen) as an addition to conventional Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy in Breast Cancer patients. Co-ordinator : Dr. M. Kar.
  • Studies on cellular de-differentiation and re-differentiation. Under Diagnostic and Cell Research Laboratory of Dr. H.G McDonald of Texas, USA. The laboratory is being transferred to this Institute. Coordinators : Dr. Rajat Mukherjee and Dr. Sujal Chandra.
