CHILD CARE CENTRE

With progress in the field of oncology, new vistas of interest opened up. Pediatric oncology (Childhood Cancer) has become one such important aspect of present day Cancer Research. The various reasons which make pediatric oncology so demanding is its increasing incidence. The fact that the spectrum of disease type in childhood cancer is completely different to that of adult cancers also remain perplexing. Above all, looking after children with cancer itself is a speciality, which poses a challenge in conventional system of care for patients in a Cancer Hospital.

With a steadily increasing number of children turning up at our Institute every year, we thought it imperative to establish a Childhood Cancer Unit at our hospital. In 1991 we opened our Pediatric Cancer Wing(Children's Little Hut) with the blessings of Mother Teresa. The unit had 16 beds with provision for one adult member to stay with each child. The entire unit was built with funds raised by children of various schools of Eastern India.

There was no specialized Pediatric Oncology Center in this part of the continent. Statistics show that about 10,000 children fall victim to this dreaded disease every year. We considered it to be a social commitment of this voluntary organization to create such a centre. This institute is well known for its success story. For the last couple of years, stress was given to develop a specialized Pediatric Oncology Centre coupled with Research Divsion. The area annexed to the northern side of the existing premises of the Institute has been developed to accomodate this new Centre. It has already come up as a splendid complex blending aesthetically with unique surrounding of sparkling lakes, green hillocks, an amusement park and a toy train. This 'Child Care Centre' was inaugurated in the year 2000 to mark the 27th anniversary of the Institute.
