Cancer Centre & Welfare Home, Thakurpukur was founded in 1973
as a registered society headed by Dr. Saroj Gupta. On a 6.5 acre
donated land, the first unit of the centre "Chintaharan Das
Seba Bhavan" was opened in 1976 named after the donor of the
land. At that time basic facilities were provided to patients who
were taken to different city hospitals for treatment. That was the
humble beginning and for the last 28 years the Centre has been rendering
services to the patients as a philanthropic and charitable organisation.
Today, it is one of the largest cancer hospitals in India with an
annual turnout of about 30,000 patients at the Out Patients' Department.
The Government of India has conferred the status of a Research Institute
in 1997. We are now "Cancer Centre Welfare Home and Research
Institute". The Institute is a member of UICC(the global body
called Union Internationale Contre Le Cancer or International Union
Against Cancer). On the national level, we are members of Indian
Cancer Society, ICMR(Indian Council of Medical Reaearch), AROI(Association
of Radiation Oncologists) and other leading institutions fighting
against cancer. The Institute has come up with strong foothold with
continuous support from the members of the society and is mostly
dependent on donations and charities.
Apart
from patient care, the Instititute has also taken up Research program
with WHO(World Health Organisation), ICMR(Indian Council of Medical
Reaearch) and such other medical institutions. The Institute is
affiliated to the National Board of Examination and teaches DNB
trainees regularly in Radiotherapy, Radio Diagnosis, Nuclear Medicine.
