Born
into a musical family in a village of West Bengal. Pt. Bishu Roy began his
musical journey at an very early age with
such an instrument which is almost a
symbol of Indian Mythology and heritage – the “Flute”. As he grew up, mere
attraction became his prayer, meditation and passion and he totally devoted his
life to the “Flute” in his early age, he was trained by Guru Birendra Nath
Bhattacharya. After his early training he came to Kolkata and undergone high
level training and technique of Flute under the instructions of Guru Gour
Goswami, a renowned flute player and direct disciple of Pt. Panna Lal Ghosh.
There he got the real taste of “Maihar Gharana” style of Hindustani
Classical Music. After sudden demise of Guru Gour Goswami, he went to another
milestone of “Maihar Gharana”, Guru Ajoy Singh Roy – a famous Sitar player
and direct disciple of legendary BABA ALLAUDDIN KHAN SAHEB. He enriched himself
with the most critical artistry of “Maihar Gharana” and typical baaz (style)
of same school through long training and under strict discipline.
Pt.
Bishu Roy adopted the Sitar – Sarode style of playing with a long Alap
(Dhrupad and Aalapchari), gatkari (composition based improvisation in the style
of Sitar & Sarode) followed by Jor, and Jhala maintaining the purity of
Hindustani Classical heritage and “Maihar Gharana”. He is not only managed
to over come the technical (inherent) limitation in an instrument like flute but
his masterly breath control and his powerful blowing technique and style on in
his own thus contributing significantly expanding the expressive possibilities
of the “FLUTE”.
Pt.
Bishu Roy believes in “Guru Shishya Parampara” and a true believer of very
hard (rigid) process of learning of vast wealth of Hindustani Classical Music
under strict discipline through long practice and experiments with purity of the
Ragas. A perfect composer, arranger and master of playing different instruments
like Santoor, Harmonium, Synthesizer, Jaltaranga etc.
