A
Post-Graduate in English Literature, Pramita Mallick is keenly
aware of the rich literary heritage of Bengal. Pramita wishes
to spread the message of Rabindranath Tagore all over the
world, especially among those who can not appreciate his works
in the original Bengali. Pramita tries in her recitals, to
highlight the universal elements in Rabindranath’s creations.
She is deeply interested in experimental projects where there
is scope for interaction between Western and Indian ideas.
Her programmes are bilingual for a wider audience but the
songs are almost always sung in their original Bengali.
She believes that a musician should be able to communicate
with the audience even though he or she is singing in a foreign
language, for music has a language of its own. SA RE GA MA
(HMV) has brought out a CD of Pramita and her disciple Mrs.
Lee - Alison Sibley in which Pramita also sang an English
transcreation of a Rabindrasangeet.
Pramita
had worked with a group of Norwegian artistes in Norway in
1994 in which they had put up a joint multimedia project on
Nature based on the Vedas, the Chandimangal kabya of the Medieval
Bengal and the seasonal songs of Rabindranath. This project
was greatly appreciated by the Norwegian audience.
Pramita
has been giving recitals, lectures, demonstrations, conducting
workshops in different parts of the world since the mid-eighties.
She has extensively toured the UK, USA, Canada, France, Germany,
Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Kuwait, Singapore,
Australia, Bangladesh and has created a considerable audience
for herself.
This leading Rabindrasangeet singer runs her own troupe
Baikali. This troupe is proud to have the legendary singer
Suchitra Mitra as its President. This troupe has presented
a number of different programmes in the UK, Australia and
all over India. These programmes, based on plays of Tagore,
Tagore songs, folk songs, contemporary Bengali songs, Classical
dances and instrumental music have been widely acclaimed all
over the world. Baikali's innovative production of Tagore’s

Pratibha" has been released by SA
RE GA MA Ltd. (HMV) and the audio CD of "The

"Pramita
Mallick’s singing was characterized by a brilliant and precise
sense of "Laya" which brought in to sharp focus
her tuneful and resonant voice with its expressive depth of
feelings"- The Statesman.
"Given
her current form you can trust Pramita Mallik blindfold for
a masterly interpretation of Tagore melodies. And those unheard
are always sweeter. At a Suchitra Mitra felicitation programme
organised by Tagore Research Institute on January 17 (Sisir
Mancha), Mallik reiterated her tryst with lesser known Tagore
gems. It was in this time of the year that Tagore rendered
the Khmaj-based Hate laye deep aganan at the Adi Bramho Samaj
congress. Full credit to Mallik for her regal handling of
this jhamptal composition, giving due to the song's spritual
aura."- The Telegraph 30th Jan'04.
"Pramita Mallick" is a complete artist… Every song
expressed the artiste’s individual sensitivity , a connection
from the heart with the composer’s creative soul, flowering
into an indescribable beauty"- Anandabazar
Patrika.
